Shashtiabdapoorthi - (60th Marriage Anniversary)

About

'Sashti Poorthi' is another name for Shashti Abda Poorthi (Sanskrit meaning: Sashti == 60, Abda == years, Poorthi == completion). This Hindu ceremony is held to honour a person who has turned sixty years old. In Western terms, it's almost the silver wedding anniversary. In Hindu culture, reaching sixty is a big deal since it's seen as a turning point in a man's life since, by then, he's usually fulfilled his responsibilities to his family and house and can focus on spirituality. We can argue that his pursuit of worldly goals defined the years before he turned sixty, and his quest of spiritualism defined the years after.

This important life milestone has been commemorated with complex and meaningful rites. There are some wedding rites that are carried out. This ritual is known by some as Ugra Ratha Shanthi, which translates to "appeasement of harsh times."

The pair asks elders who have fulfilled their own Shashti Abda Poorthi for their blessings, and in return, they bless their younger selves.
There are regional variations in the Kalasa Sthapanam process, primarily related to the quantity of kalashas used—60, 33, or 12 are possible. Invoking the deities, Shodasa Upachara Pooja is done following Kalasa Sthapana, involving the recitation of Vedic mantras.
