Long ago, the demon king Mahishasura received a boon that no man or god could kill him. Empowered by this, he conquered heaven and disturbed the balance of dharma. The Devas sought help, and from the combined energies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, Goddess Durga was born.

She fought Mahishasura for nine nights and ten days, finally killing him on the tenth day. Thus, Navaratri celebrates the victory of good over evil.
